What are the Benefits of Being Mentally Tough?

The Umbrella of "Mental Toughness"

Everyone talks about the importance of “being mentally tough” but few can tell you exactly what “mental toughness” really means - or how you should go about developing it.

We look at “mental toughness” as an umbrella term that covers a number of different, sometimes interrelated mental skills. When you combine all of these mental skills together into one person, the end result is an athlete who is mentally tough.

  • Staying calm under pressure = maintaining a physical looseness and emotional/mental relaxation when the game is on the line.
  • Concentrating on what’s important and being able to either block out and/or let go of distractions.
  • Rebounding quickly from mistakes, bad breaks and bad calls during the run of the game.
  • Avoiding psych-outs and intimidation.
  • Mastering physical and emotional adversity/pain/discomfort.
  • Effectively handling last minute negative thinking and self-doubts.
  • Maintaining control of your emotions.
  • Believing in yourself NO MATTER WHAT.
  • Being self-motivated.
  • Having winning self-confidence.
